In Memoriam Father Jacques Hamel

November 30th 1947 - July 26th 2016

We, the Eudists, regret the murder of this priest slain during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. "I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." (Matthew 5: 44)

If there would be an occasion in which I would be obliged either to die or to reject your holy faith or to do something important against your divine will, I make a vow and I promise you, with my confidence in your infinite kindness and with the help of your grace, as firm and constant as possible, to proclaim you, to recognize you, to worship you and to glorify you, front of everyone, at the price of my blood, of my life and of all martyrdoms and possible torments, and to suffer thousand deaths with all the torments of the earth and hell, rather than deny you or to do something important against your holy will.

(Vow of Martyrdom, Saint John Eudes)
