At the end of this liturgical year we also celebrate the Great Feast of Christ the King as the culmination of all the events in our Mother church this year. Jesus Christ our Savior is King of all kings and the whole universe. He rules with great love, justice and mercy among all the creatures.

This feast of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 the time when the modernism also arose. He mentioned in his encyclical Quas Primas “Humankind must look for the peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ.” And in commemorating this feast we may gain much strength and courage enabling us to form our Christian lives after the true Christian ideals. The Pope observed that many people during that time put aside Jesus Christ in their lives. By the celebration of this feast of Christ the King as Universal King he reminded the humanity could not do anything without Christ. Only in the restoration of the empire of our Lord Jesus Christ real justice, peace, truth and love reigned.

The Gospel that we have heard today taught us that Jesus’ Kingship is different from the kingship of the worldly kings.

  • If the worldly king wants to be served, Jesus Christ served us. If the worldly king wants to be honored Jesus Christ humbled Himself. If the worldly king gives burden to his constituents Jesus Christ helped us to carry our burden.
  • If the worldly king wants wealth and power Jesus Christ emptied Himself and loosed them all.
  • If the worldly king looks down to his people as slaves, Jesus Christ looked at us as His friends.
  • If the worldly king could sacrifice his people for his sake, Jesus Christ died for us in order to save us.
  • If the worldly kings has golden crown and sits on the throne, Jesus Christ wore crown of thorns and was hung on the wooden cross.

This is paradox of Jesus’ Kingship. The world has many kings and kingdoms but all of them did not last and their kingship has boundary and limitation. Only Jesus Christ reigns forever here and in eternity.

Now, to whom do you want to submit yourself to the worldly king or to the One and Only True King of the Universe who is Jesus Christ our True Master and Savior?
